I remember when I first met Mr Wee. He was then Principal of Temasek Junior College and was to be among the first of that new breed of educational leaders to see the importance of corporate culture. In that, he was way ahead of his time. When other principals ruled distantly and by dictum and fear, Mr Wee led with a heart that understood both his teachers’ and his students’ needs.
Mr Wee has that unwavering courtesy in all circumstances that makes him a true gentleman. He was careful and cautious, and had the welfare of the people he was working with at heart. His was not the pleasure of putting people down or showing them up; his was the satisfaction of working closely and in partnership with colleagues.

I also had the wonderful opportunity of working with Mr Wee in the Singapore Educational Administration Society when he was Chairman and I was first a committee member and subsequently, the vice-chairman. His clarity on issues, coupled with a willingness to explain, has been my model in leadership. When you work with Mr Wee, it is always an atmosphere of trust. That too has become my leadership axiom.
The Academy thanks Mr Wee Heng Tin for his many contributions to professional development that have led to the formation of the Academy of Principals. We have therefore made him our first Honorary Member, a conferment the Academy reserves for those who have distinguished themselves in the service of education.
